Two weeks in the Dordogne

The Humans

The two weeks in the Dordogne are remembered not as a detailed holiday episode but through two shared activities: swimming and a game of dominoes. For Gulliver, the recollection carries the warmth of time spent with his father when he was eight. For Andrew Martin (the alien narrator), it becomes a concrete example of their closeness—and, later, a tentative offer to make that closeness happen again. Its significance lies in the distance between a genuine shared memory and the much larger absence it cannot undo.

A Childhood Memory

On the roof, Gulliver recalls swimming with Andrew in France when he was eight, and remembers Andrew teaching him to play dominoes that night. He speaks as though the details should be familiar to his father, looking back for recognition. Andrew answers that he remembers, although his earlier response to Gulliver’s danger has already exposed how difficult it is for him to know what to say or do as a father. The holiday recollection briefly gives the two of them a specific past to share: a pool, a game, and a moment of instruction.

The memory is strikingly modest. It does not describe an extraordinary outing or establish a continuing pattern of attentive parenting; it names a few ordinary activities from a two-week stay in the Dordogne. Precisely because the scene is so small, it can function as a personal touchstone. Gulliver offers it as something that belongs to both of them, while Andrew seizes on its concreteness when he later tries to explain their relationship.

A Disputed Measure of Fatherhood

When Isobel Martin, author of the unfinished novel, tells Andrew that he has not really been there for Gulliver, Andrew recalls what Gulliver said on the roof and asks about France. He explains that he taught his son dominoes and swam with him there. The remembered holiday becomes evidence he can produce in response to an accusation about the whole of Gulliver’s life.

Isobel identifies the limits of that defense. She reduces the example to two weeks in the Dordogne and a box of dominoes, rejecting it as a sufficient answer to the longer history of Andrew’s absence. Her objection distinguishes a real memory from a persuasive account of fatherhood: the holiday happened, and the activities mattered, but a brief interval cannot stand in for years of presence. Andrew does not insist that it can. He says he was trying to offer a solid example of what Gulliver was like, and then falters over the pronoun, leaving the exchange’s deeper disagreement unresolved.

An Attempt to Return

Later, Andrew offers to play dominoes with Gulliver when they get home, mentioning that he bought a box that morning. When Gulliver declines, Andrew proposes going to the Dordogne, then clarifies that he means swimming. The offers follow the exact pattern of the childhood memory: dominoes first, the French holiday and swimming next. Rather than invent a new way to reach his son, Andrew reaches for the activities already associated with a time when they had been together.

Gulliver refuses the invitations and tells Andrew that he needs more tablets. Andrew responds that Gulliver has eaten all of his, tries to smile, and attempts humor. The exchange does not show the proposed return to the Dordogne taking place; the holiday remains an offer rather than a repaired relationship. Its repetition nevertheless changes the memory’s function. What had been evidence of past intimacy becomes a fragile invitation to share something again, one Gulliver does not accept.

The Holiday’s Significance

The Dordogne links memory, argument, and attempted reconciliation without resolving the conflict between them. Gulliver’s recollection confirms that there was a time when Andrew taught him something and shared ordinary pleasures with him. Isobel’s response prevents that moment from being inflated into proof of sustained fatherhood. Andrew’s later proposals show him trying to translate remembrance into action, but Gulliver’s refusal makes clear that repeating the activities cannot by itself restore their former connection.

The two weeks therefore matter less as a fully narrated vacation than as a contested measure of what a relationship can hold. Swimming and dominoes are specific enough to make the past tangible, yet too limited to answer the charge of absence. The memory gives Andrew something real to reach for—and shows why a real memory, however tender, is not the same as having been there all along.
